The Legend of La Llorona
Kipling West suggested that I should paint the image of La Llorona based on an article she found on Neatorama, and I listened to her, although I didn’t expect that it was going to freak me out.
The original legend has many variations, but the one similar theme in all of them is that after a mother drowns her children in a river, she looses her mind, kills herself and continues to walk the banks looking for her lost babies. If by chance, you’re a child and found by “The Weeping Woman”, she will claim you as her own. This other version that Kip sent to me was adapted by homeless children in Florida. It’s similar, but she’s apparently moved on from the river bank.
I’m thinking now that I should probably do Bloody Mary next, another legendary murderess. perhaps I’ll use the image of Queen Mary I for the haunted mirror image…

oooh, i got chill-bumps! It’s horrifying in the most wonderful way! Really, i had to look away for a while and process it,,,she looks like she is goingto reach right out of the painting! (shivers)
I can’t wait to see Bloody Mary!!!! Being freaked out is awesome!
oh and as a p.s., i remember reading a few years ago an article that Clive Barker was wanting to adapt this myth into a film, having been inspired by the homeless kids in Miami speaking of “Bloody Mary”.
Old Clive is notorious for his unfinished plans, but wouldn’t that be a great scary movie!!!! I hope he actually makes this one!
Thanks Amanda!
I wondered after I finished it who might hang this on their wall -it creeps me out, and I painted it!
While researching the story, I did come across this website about a movie production working on a La Llorona film, though this one seems geared around the original legend as opposed to the homeless children legend. It may also be a trilogy type movie too, my favourite!
holy crap! i grew up with the story of la llorona…glad i didn’t have THIS image of her in my head as a kid! LOL! i found your site through the button box! that is pretty cool that they will make a llorona movie….that’ll be a scary one! cool blog!

Huh?
Hi Breid,
I love your painting and was hoping I could attach it to an essay I am writing about the 3 fabled women of Mexico: La Llorona, La Guadalupe and La Malinche. I only want to use the image as as illustration, it would be about 2″ on the page.
I would be happy to email you the essay if you’d be interested to read it, either in English or Spanish but the Spanish version is the more complete..
Please let me know and a very good job of capturing the chill of La Llorona’s anguish!
Simon
Of Course you may Simon! And thanks for the compliment. I only ask that I get credit.
I’d love to read your essay, although I can only read English so English it’ll have to be.

Hi Kylene, You can find most of the links on the post itself (they’re hi-lighted in red). but here’s a link that was posted on one of those links incase you missed it.

Well Daisy, it’s not meant to be pretty, so I suppose I’ve accomplished what I meant to (thank you), although I prefer to call it frightful rather than ugly.

Ya I believe in la llorona. I spent a year in mexico with my uncle and my cousin. We all decided to go for a walk down by the river because I like to do that in America. Well we came by this creepy place where there was an abandoned little cabin and it was right next to the river. I was very small at the time and my uncle picked me up and told my cousin to go behind the cabin. He carried me back there and he was peeking behind from the cabin next thing I saw was this women standing there crying right next to the water. she seemed to move into the river very slowely and was just weeping staring down in the water. We stood there for a second and watched her and then in that minute she did a bloody scream by uncle picked me up again and told my cousin to run. He ran carrying me with my cousin beside us. we got away safely but it was the scariest thing I have ever seen in my life. I believe and trust me you dont want to experience it.

Very nice depiction of the infamous Weeping Woman! I published a fantasy book for young adults (HEART OF THE JAGUAR) last year detailing how the Llorona came to be, and I’m always fascinated by the many different versions there are to describe her origin. In my novel, a young woman discovers that she has an ancient past (which takes place during Aztec times) that links her to the legendary woman and that past helps her overcome her troubled upbringing; thus, portaying the Llorona in a good light. So, according to me, she is a victim of circumstance and somewhat of a hero at best. Thanks for keeping the legend alive. I wish you much success!

Thanks JAX! I really like your twist on her story and yet you’ve seemed to have kept the original intent of the legend as well. I’m very interested in reading it.
Its a really wonderful art pice I have never seen la llorona or heard but all my friends and familly talk about it so its intresting to see what all about the llorona. Good job!!!!!!!! Get down!!

man shes real! once i was in lake michigan and i saw her and she was chasing me. but
phew. good thing there was people near by and she didnt mistaken me for her children. although i feel pity for her. she cant be welcome to heaven unless she finds her children… it just makes me feel so sad just to hear the story of her again and again. i wish i could find her children so she could be heaven like 500 years ago.
Hey addii_36, go right ahead and use the image. Hopefully you’ll get a better grade than I did in English class!
Just remember to add my name with the picture so that people know who the image belongs to.
Good Luck!
